PETROL IGNITES THE PAWN REVOLUTION

CASTING A SPELL OF REINVENTION

A one-of-a-kind gameplay experience cloaked in the seemingly familiar world of dragons, knights, and magic, DRAGON’S DOGMA presented a unique challenge for PETROL. The space of open-world fantasy RPGs is a vast one, populated with many IPs that share a similar aesthetic. Our job was to communicate that point of differentiation as concisely and compellingly as possible to help set apart DRAGON’S DOGMA from the fray and ultimately drive sales. Through a fully integrated, holistic campaign that included a massive social media push, interactive apps, original animated videos, key art, and packaging, we pushed the boundaries of the genre and demanded consumers recognize a new IP.



Social Campaign

Utilizing Facebook as our main canvas, with the support of YouTube and two dedicated Twitter feeds, we created a social media campaign for DRAGON’S DOGMA that was instrumental in transforming it from a new IP with zero brand recognition to one of the hottest titles of late spring. Through macro-engagements on Facebook such as a fully interactive map, a three-part digital comic book and a customizable character photo app, as well as micro-engagements such as multiple daily updates, personalized interactions and contests, we created a destination that has resonated to the tune of over 20,000 users with thousands of them actively engaging with the community every day.

Key Art/Packaging

The classic style that has been popular in the fantasy genre for decades has saturated the market with games that look identical. To declare an ownable look for DRAGON’S DOGMA that spread across key art, packaging and print, we pushed the boundaries to usher in a new era of emotion, conflict and action leaving the stoic, posed and stiff wizards in the past.

Digital Comic Book - AV

Working closely with DRAGON’S DOGMA’s genius creator Hideaki Itsuno and Capcom’s North America team, we created a three-part animated prequel to the game that was spread through our social channels. Built completely in house utilizing our very best in original illustration and motion graphics, we built an emotional precursor that carried its own unique style while still fitting in with the world of our campaign.

Interactive Map Tab

PETROL created original illustrations and writing, then designed with exclusive in-game assets, and built an Interactive Map that educated our Facebook community about the different areas of DRAGON’S DOGMA. Through tiered releases each week, we would showcase unique locations, each described by an actual character from the game’s universe.

Pawn Revolution App

The PAWN REVOLUTION APP, featured on the Facebook page allowed users to choose 3 characters from different classes in several different poses. Users could then place these Pawns within a background from the game, creating a compelling action scene. Alternatively, they could upload or take a photo with their web camera, and then pose the pawns in the photo with them. From this they could generate a wallpaper for iPhone, iPad and Android, printable poster or Facebook Profile Picture as a way to virally spread this UGC amongst the fans.

For DRAGON’S DOGMA web presence, we designed a slick brand site that featured full-bleed artwork on a sliding parallax to create one cohesive browsing experience. As we revealed each different class of character, we would add new additions to the skin as well as new fan kits, keeping it fresh and optimized with the rest of the campaign.

Pawns Unleashed – Mobile App

To merge the world of DRAGON’S DOGMA into our own, Petrol created a mobile app, PAWNS UNLEASHED for Android and iOS. Through a streamlined interface, users choose their pawns and can send them to fight against other players in scavenger hunts and races around the world to earn badges, treasure and exclusive DLC. Filled with a deep variety of missions and customization that ties into the greater social experience, PAWNS UNLEASHED is a step forward in bridging the gap between advertising and social storytelling.
