THE ART OF APOCALYPSE

PETROL TAKES PAINTING UNDERGROUND

The world of METRO: LAST LIGHT is dark, desperate, and mysterious…but it’s also beautiful in unexpected ways. To capture the blurred-edges of a world lit only by the tiniest bit of light, PETROL turned to traditional oil-painting style, giving METRO a look that’s unprecedented in video gaming. This look also carried over to an innovative E3 piece that ended up being one of the most buzzed-about premieres at E3 2011.

Case Studies:

Key Art

PETROL’s in-house illustrators created 5 original oil paintings set in METRO’s dark tunnels. Even our CCO/President embraced the opportunity to get hands-on with canvas and paints. These pieces established the style that would live throughout the entire campaign.

Packaging

M is for iMpact: In creating the packaging for METRO: LAST LIGHT, PETROL and THQ wanted something that would jump off the shelves.

E3 Trailer

An eerie, urgent soundtrack coupled with the creative use of painting, motion graphics, and type worked together to earn PETROL’s E3 trailer for METRO a G4 “Best of E3” nomination.

Out of Home

To make a disturbing, evocative statement at E3, we created an over 40ft tall version of our gas-masked soldier. Now, event-goers will get an ice-cold welcome into the main convention hall.
